About

I'm Tyler Standish, a product security engineer in the automotive industry. I've spent most of my time working on embedded systems, vehicle telematics, and cryptography, but I'm happy to poke at the security of anything from web apps, new tech, or a smart toaster given the chance. What I enjoy most is the puzzle of figuring out how a system can be attacked and how to defend it. Cars happen to be a particularly entertaining version of that puzzle, since they're rolling networks built by dozens of suppliers who all have a different opinion of what security means. Before automotive I worked in defense, where I worked on niche aircraft systems. One thing I learned from that experience is that it's never true that a system is too obscure to be a target.

This blog is where I write down what I know and what I'm figuring out. You'll find guides, lessons I've learned the hard way, deep dives into topics I want to understand better, and occasional opinions I'm willing to defend. Partly it's for future me, who will need all of this again someday and will be glad past me bothered to write it clearly. Mostly it's just the stuff I find worth writing down.
